[River Keepers]Story by Carly Syverson Photography provided by River Keepers, a local non-profit dedicated to promoting respect for the river and surrounding nature, came about in 1990 when knowledge and appreciation for the Red River was at an all-time low. Disappointed in how the Red River was being treated and passionate about fixing it, the team set out to make a positive change that would end up impacting the entire community. Throughout the years, their projects have grown to encompass more aspects of sustainability, while their goals have stayed consistent. They work tirelessly to educate, celebrate, and nurture our Red River. River Keepers embarked on a mission to renew value and reverence for the Red River as a vital part of the Fargo/Moorhead community and continue to serve every day. They focus on three main areas: education, stewardship, and leadership to help spread this message. By taking these steps, they have established a group of well-educated, passionate members of society that will continue this work for time to come. A main goal for the River Keepers team is to educate the community about all things river related. They emphasize this because once more people understand finer details of the nature around them, the more likely they will be able to work at keeping their environment healthy and thriving. Ultimately, the more people invested, the better the river will be cared for. To accomplish this, they have implemented various forms of education to help people of all ages learn. The group utilizes several different social media platforms to spread their message and host events for all age groups. Going beyond simply educating people about the river, the organization publishes information to promote lifestyle changes that encompass all types of environmentally-friendly living. Even the smallest change in a daily routine can produce a huge impact. As a part of their mission, heavy importance is placed on stewardship. Through the years, they have demonstrated this through various projects that include river clean up events, planting trees along the Red River, and other community engagement activities. One of the best ways to lead is by example, and River Keepers has done an excellent job of this. Over the years, they have continued to bring together like-minded individuals who have worked hard to keep the local landscape safe and beautiful. Perhaps the most important aspect of this mission has been enabling people to learn how to celebrate the environment and use it to bring them joy. This has been done by hosting events and an array of fun activities throughout the community. Take part in their winter scavenger hunt, go snowshoeing along the Red, kayak down the river, or enjoy a round in their annual golf tournament.
This organization dedicates their service to creating a more sustainable, safe, and appealing environment in the F/M area and have been awarded by the EPA for their efforts. Volunteers play a vital role in helping to accomplish the various events and donations from community members allow the organization to reach their full potential.
