[ Trever Hill Design ]Story by Tracy Nicholson Photography by Dan Francis Photography Welcome to Roberts Alley and their newest neighbor, Curated, by Trever Hill Design. Located in the heart of Downtown Fargo, the owners, Trever Hill and Jesse Masterson, are ready to reveal what's in store for their new home design and furnishings boutique. As we take a tour through the facade's glass garage doors, you're invited to do a little high-style window shopping. Inside they've curated an uncommon selection of "found" pieces, custom fabric designs, hand-crafted home accessories, and sustainable style you'll love bringing home. Inside Curated, by THDInside Curated, Hill has chosen an array of global textures and patterns, intermingling organic materials and luxurious velvets. Between the aroma and the aesthetic, we weren't sure what our senses fell in love with first. "Jesse and I live in Downtown Fargo, and I'd always said that if we opened a small retail store, this is the exact spot I'd want to be," said Hill. "I reached out to Kilbourne Group quite a few months ago to let them know I was interested, but it didn't seem like it would be available anytime soon. We did look at some other spaces, but my heart was still here. When the space opened up, we jumped on it. After that, we got to work with Weyer-for-Hire painting the store Tricorn Black and the door a green called Hunt Club. We also added lighting by Arteriors, and worked with Benjamin Custom Homes to complete the brick wall and herringbone sliding door." One of the things that drew Hill and Masterson to this storefront is the huge glass windows and garage door. "It's essentially a live billboard, so we plan to have it illuminated with LEDs 24/7, giving people something to see when they walk by. It's only 750 square feet, but I felt it was a great place to have a retail shop. We will have a few people working at the store, like Shantel Fagerholt and Paige Breidenbach. You also might find my assistant Chase, Jesse, or myself here from time to time." Uncommonly Curated"Curated is a colorful, unique space that will be constantly evolving; it's not what you're going to see anywhere else. So, even though we have some of the same vendors as other local boutiques, you're not going to find the same items," said Hill. "To me, this is a fun environment to find unique pieces or that one-off accent that's truly uncommon. At Curated, you'll find a selection of handpicked local art, custom furnishings, global accents, 'found' and vintage elements, as well as handcrafted and sustainable lines." Throughout the store, patrons can browse local art by Capital Gallery's resident artists such as Walter Piehl, Britta Anderson, Erica Thune, Shelley Larson and many more. Just inside the entrance, Curated features two canvas pieces and an eclectic wall installation, all by Britta Anderson. Near the desk, Hill has a vibrant arrangement of furnishings, including a large canvas piece entitled, Daybreak, by Erica Thune. Most boutiques have a lot of displays stacked with items, but Hill wanted Curated to feel like a home guests could experience. "The environment is mainly staged areas, with just a few extra pillows and accessories. I want to show people how to live with these pieces and how they can work together to create something really beautiful," said Hill. Although the store's name is Curated by Trever Hill Design, the two businesses do have a professional separation. "I don't plan to bring clients here for design meetings, and I'm still going to run THD like I always have, sourcing furniture from all of our local stores and vendors. This store is an extension of THD, and a nice addition to offer, not only to my clients, but the whole community," explained Hill. Curated + Cisco Brothers "One of the perks of opening Curated is that we can give people the chance to try out some of the other really unique lines, like Cisco Brothers. I have wanted to bring this line to Fargo for years, and this was a great opportunity to do that," said Hill. "They're based in Los Angeles and focus on sustainable, handcrafted and eco-friendly designs. I love that it's a high-quality line, but also reasonably priced; currently, we are the only Cisco Brothers vendor in North Dakota." The upholstered bed you'll see on display is part of their line and shows the high-performance velvet in Lacy French Rose. Above the bed, guests to the store will find a beautiful piece by local artist, Britta Anderson. Beyond Cisco Brothers, Curated is offering lines like Palecek, and Classic Home - another brand that offers handcrafted and sustainable pieces. "We also have Loloi, Four Hands, and Blue Ocean Traders, which brings a lot of really interesting ‘found’ items. Blue Ocean Traders specialize in source salvaged, reclaimed, vintage items and also produce true-to-form reproductions," said Hill. Pillow Talk If you're on the search for new accent pillows, you'll love the array of styles from Loloi, Saro and Global Views. Curated also offers hand-selected fabrics and rare, vintage rug pillows that are truly unique in texture and pattern. Above the pillows, Hill and Masterson display the work of local artist, Walter Piehl, while lower, you'll find work by another local artist, Shelley Larson. "Found" FindsCurated's collection includes many items that Hill and Masterson have found at markets while traveling, like the white bowl from Joshua Tree and the paper mâché bowls by Blue Ocean Traders. "When the paper mâché bowls arrive, we never know what we're getting, each one is unique in its style, shape and color," said Hill. Redesigning DininG To create Curated's dining style, Hill fused two edgier eras and two rich fabrics. "These are one-of-a-kind dining chairs, built in a Mid-century style, then recreated in Retro fabrics," said Hill. "Although they arrived new, in grey canvas fabric, I decided to reupholster them. I replaced the fabric with an ultra-custom design using a crushed velvet on the front and a striped velvet on the back. Doing custom orders like this can take anywhere from eight to 10 weeks, but I really felt they needed a more distinct look." Overlooking the table, you'll find another vibrant work by the artist, Walter Piehl. At the top of the white brick hearth, Hill and Masterson have displayed another stunning painting entitled, Head in the Clouds, by artist Britta Anderson. "Essential" Finds Looking for a great gift? Curated is proud to carry Illume, a Minnesota-based line of all-natural candles. In stock, you'll find their lidded ceramic line in the newest essential oil collection of Amber Bergamot, Citrus Cedarleaf, Rosewood Cassis and Cypress Lavender. Another great gift is Curated's line of totes, purses, and backpacks by MATT & NAT. The eco-friendly company is committed to using only vegan leather and other sustainable and recyclable materials. Shop & Reuse Bringing the shopping experience full-circle, Hill and Masterson, along with friends and staff, hand-painted each of the boutique's retail bags with colorful abstract designs and signature tags from the artists. A simple way to encourage patrons to happily reuse them as art-infused gift bags.
Although you may see Curated's boutique leaning toward a Mid-century and Boho-Retro vibe now, the store's personality will be ever-evolving, changing its design and offerings multiple times a year. Since much of their inventory is comprised of one-offs and original pieces, you'll want to shop often. Once an item is gone, you likely won't see it again.
