If January reflects the first blank pages in our 12-chapter book chronicling 2019, I'm probably not off to a great start (insert Netflix). After a whirlwind 2018, and our first full year as magazine publishers, Susan and I needed a vaca. Instead of actually taking one, we designed our first issue of the new year to be all about local folks who live two fabulous lives; one on the prairie, and one under the palm trees (insert envy).
When the holidays end, like clockwork, we all start dreaming of a little less, snow-covered prairie and a little more, sand-covered beach. Lately, I've noticed that a lot of Fargoans are splitting their time between two time zones, and surprisingly, it's not anywhere near the ocean.
Palm Springs - it seems to be the place to go. If you're like me and you've never made the trip, according to this month's issue - it's all good things; Mid-century Modern architecture, gorgeous pools, desert landscapes, dry heat (more good hair days), palm trees, and Elvis' infamous "Honeymoon Hideaway". I'm not even sure I need the ocean, especially if there are shark-free, sparkling blue, super-sanitized pools everywhere I turn. Seriously, who can take me?
This month, we may not have booked an actual vacation, but we loved the trip through our pages. We'll introduce you to a designer, originally from Antler, N.D., who gives us a gorgeous tour of her design projects and Palm Springs Airbnb. You'll also meet a graphic designer perched in the branches near Downtown Fargo, and see his contemporary take on Palm Springs, RV park living. After that, we set our sites on Scottsdale, A.Z., where we toured an Airbnb designed by a local designer and Bismarck resident. This trip, not unlike magazine publishing, was really fun; but just like after every good trip... we need a nap.
As always, thank you for reading,
Happy New Year!
